Q -What does your company do?
Answer:
Q - What will it cost per square foot?
Answer:
Without knowing your life style, what your desires are, your wants, needs and expectations are this question is impossible to answer. It’s like asking “what did you pay per pound for your car”? Granite counter tops will cost more than laminates, tile costs more that linoleum, etc. so, be cautious of the builder who can give a fixed price based on square footage – what you get probably won’t be what you thought you’d receive.
Q – What can I do to reduce energy costs?
Answer:
Insulate - especially the ceiling which helps keep the heated/cooled air within the homes envelope.
Installing new windows with low E glazing, double/triple pane, gas filled, and energy star compliant can generate significant savings in energy costs. One of our customers stated we reduced there fuel consumption by 33% when we installed there new windows.
New siding - foam insulated backing can increase the energy-efficiency of your home by as much as 20%.
If you’re building a new home try to take advantage of southern exposures to utilize solar design options.
Q – Can we do some of the work ourselves?
Answer:
This is called sweat equity and even though this sounds like a great idea it usually does not work and here is why;
Timing – we “build” your home in the office before any nail is driven. This gives us a realistic time line of when tasks should be completed and we schedule the next job based upon that completion date.
If a task is not completed in a timely manner everything has to be re-scheduled. This can be very costly and delays final completion of the project by days, weeks and even months.
You, probably having additional obligations (work, children, home duties, etc) may be hard pressed to complete a task in the time frame allotted thus backing the project up. If a contractor has to pull off a job because a task was not completed in a timely manner, he and his employees loose pay for the day. This may force your contractor to start another project so his employees and company continue to have an income.
Insurance – Insurance is required by state law and contractors must carry Workers’ Compensation for there employees in case of injuries. Since you would be a contractor you would be required to have and produce Certificates of insurance.
